Dresden is preparing for its third large summer event for 2026, the Dresden Melon Festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 1. This all-day celebration, hosted by The Friends of the Dresden Parks, honors Dresden’s melon-growing history.
The festival will be held at the Dresden River Park with parking at nearby Tri-Valley High School. Shuttle services will be provided. Entry to the event is only $1 per person until 4 p.m. and $2 after that.
This is the 19th year that the Dresden Melon Festival has been held after bringing it back. The event was established many years ago to celebrate the harvest of the locally grown Dresden Melon. The festival has become a summertime favorite.
“The big thing this year is just the change of our schedule of events,” said Mellisa Stanford, Dresden Melon Festival Committee Chair. “That’s gonna be the big thing that we are trying to communicate because it’s always been the same.”
The decision to shift certain events was made because even though parts of the festival are in the shade, certain events can still get pretty hot for participants and those observing.
Some popular events for the day include a fishing tournament (starting at 5:30 a.m.), craft show/flea market (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), a 5K/10K race (9:30 a.m.), kids’ games, a bounce house and petting zoo (9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), a kid’s watermelon eating contest (11:00 a.m.), a kids’ seed spitting contest (noon), the melon derby (1:00 p.m.), a cornhole tournament (registration at noon, tournament at 1:00 p.m., and winners announced at 3:00 p.m.), and a cruise-in (from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.), For a complete list of events visit the Dresden Melon Festival website.
“This year I really wanted to focus on the vendors,” said Stanford. There are around 30 vendors who have registered. Stanford mentioned one of her favorites being a glass blowing group who work at The Works in Newark.
Musical entertainment for the evening includes Tom & Brady, Hunter Lepi, and Appalachian Outlaws performing at 3:10 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
Volunteers are needed to help at checkpoints for the 5K and 10K race. Additionally, The Friends of the Dresden Parks is looking for people who are interested in joining.
“Having people who are either hands-on and want to be part of, maintaining the village is helpful. And then also anybody who has experience with grant writing and development,” said Stanford. The Dresden Melon Festival is a fundraiser for The Friends of the Dresden Parks. Although most of the money raised each year from the festival goes back into the event for the upcoming year, the remaining proceeds go towards improving the park spaces, most notably supplies for the annual spring clean-up and flowers for the planters down Main Street.
