As families settle into busy fall
schedules, September serves as a
reminder of the importance of mak-
ing time to eat together. Recognized
as National Family Meals Month, this
observance encourages families to
share meals and strengthen connec-
tions around the table. Regular fami-
ly meals provide benefits that extend
well beyond nutrition. According to
the Academy of Nutrition and Di-
etetics (2026), children who partici-
pate in family meals are more likely
to eat fruits, vegetables, and other
nutrient-rich foods while developing
healthy eating habits that can last a
lifetime. Shared meals also support
emotional and social well-being. Re-
search has found that adolescents
who eat regularly with their fami-
lies experience higher self-esteem,
better academic performance, and
lower rates of tobacco, alcohol, and
substance use. Family meals are
also associated with lower levels of
depressive symptoms and improved
family communication.

mealtimes to model healthy eating
